Facilitator Group 4
I found this advertisement by typing "anti drug campaign" into Google. I chose this poster because it focuses on a different drug than we usually discuss in class and it focuses on the effects of the drug rather than just saying not to do it.
Discussion Questions
1) What is the effect of the poster not specifically saying "don't do this" but instead just saying "not even once"?
2) How does this poster try use pathos to appeal to the audience?
3) Why did the creator only chose to show one of the girls affected physically by meth?
4) How does the creator use gender to catch the audiences attention?

Blog Prompt 4)
ReplyDeleteThe creator of this picture uses attractive females to portray the message that drugs make anyone look undesirable. Also, by using females the creator targets a female demographic in particular. Another point that is to be made is that girls generally share everything. The creator wants to spread the message that if you share drugs in particular "meth" you are likely to share similar diseases transmitted through blood. Finally, the girls attract audience because of their age. They both seem relatively young to be using, and the picture shows that drugs can effect anyone at any age.
Blog Prompt 6
ReplyDeleteThe author of the poster is trying to inform the audience that not only can drugs affect you as you are on them but you could potentially contract a STD/disease from them as well. First, the author tries to make his argument by showing two average looking young girls who look like they have been through a lot. They have makeup smeared on their faces, their hair looks out of place, and they look tired and confused. The author represents these girls like this to make it known that they are average girls in society and from just one mistake they contracted a disease. This shows the audience that this could happen to anyone not just people who are drug addicts. Another way the author makes his argument is by the words that he choose to put on the poster. The first set of words, "My friends and I share everything," traps the audience because most people reading this ad are young teens and most teen girls in fact do share a lot. The statement following it says, "Now we share hepatitis and HIV," and as well this captures the audience even more because they take from this that together the two girls went out and in the end were both mutually harmed by the drug they took.

ReplyDeleteThe text on this image reads “My friends and I share everything. Now we share Hepatitis and HIV.”. This is an appeal to teenagers, and, more specifically, teenage girls. Teenage girls typically spend a lot of time with their friends and tend to share their belongings with their closest friends. Also, the image shows two teenage girls who are presumably friends. The creator of the image is trying to target the young female audience with this image. The creator believes that young women may abuse drugs with their friends and is using this ad to persuade them not to.
This poster is against teenagers trying drugs, and so it says “not even once,” meaning that teenagers shouldn’t even try drugs just once. A lot of teenagers may believe that there is no harm in trying a drug just once. However, they may become addicted to whichever substance they decide to try, even after only using it once. Many people quickly become addicted to using drugs. Using drugs greatly affects one’s life in a very negative way, and it is often difficult to turn one’s life around after one has begun to use drugs. This poster is saying that teenagers should never try drugs, “not even once”.

ReplyDeleteThe creator of this ad uses a dark background to let the two girls stand out. The creator probably used teenage girls ad to illustrate innocence. The phrase "Me and my friends share everything", along with the lipstick show that the two are friends and are comfortable with each other. This could also indicate a sense of peer pressure which caused the girls to use meth, and consequently, "share" these diseases. The creator also appears to use a before and after type concept here. The girl on the right appears to maybe be already under the influence, suggested by her blank stare and tired eyes. And the girl on the left is looking at "you" the audience with a judgmental facial expression, as if she knows it's wrong, however because her friends do it, she is also at risk of doing it.

ReplyDeleteThe creator of this ad used the images of the girls to catch the attention of the audience. The girls look like they have just "gone out" they are both wearing smudged make-up and have messy hair. Even through the make-up and the hair the girls refect the image of being pretty and popular. These two comcepts are images that poeple, women in particular want to refect themselves; most people want to be attractive and have freiends. Drugs and the idea of them work the same way. Most people start using drugs because they seem "cool. The creator of the ad turns both of these concept back in the face of his audience. The ad says that doing something because your friend does it or because it seems "cool" can have some very bad consequences.
Prompt 1
ReplyDeleteThis ad conveys most of it's message through it's visual elements. The first thing that pops out at me are the two girls faces. They are both young and very pretty, and do not seem like the typical meth users. The first girl seems to be staring directly at the camera with a bitter and piercing look. Her skin appears ghastly which is a stark contrast to the bright lipstick she is holding. The second girl seems to be the opposite of the first girl and has a vacant look in her eyes. Her makeup is also smudged and her blush on her cheek makes bruised. The message of the poster is that drugs can also give you diseases and the overall look of the two girls make them appear very sickly. A second visual element I thought was interesting was the background. To me the background looks like a starry night. This could represent how the girls had lots of dreams about a bright future before the drug use.
Blog Prompt #3
ReplyDeleteI feel like both of the girls look like they have been physically been affected by meth. However, I do agree that the girl in the blue shirt looks more torn down than the girl in the purple shirt. I believe that the creator does this to show how the drug affects your physical health over time. It seems that the girl in the blue shirt may have been using drugs for a longer time than the girl in the purple shirt and therefore looks worse. Since the poster says, "not even once," I believe that showing a girl that has been using longer creates a stronger message because it shows that, if you use once or many times, you will always look disheveled and like a drug user.
Blog Prompt 1
ReplyDeleteThis poster using a lot of visuals to show the effects of the meth on the two young women. I think that by saying not even once that it places emphasis on the fact that even one use could completely alter your life. Not just with transmission of disease like it states, but through addiction as well. The speaker chooses to use girls in this poster, because they are known much better than men for sharing things. Meth uses needles often times and if you share needles it is very likely that you will end up sharing diseases with the people that you share the needles with.
