This is an anti-smoking commercial in which a woman clearly affected by nicotine expresses her sincere concern for nicotine addicts.
Blog Prompts:
1) Does the woman's appearance directly affect the commercial? How so?
2) What demographics does this commercial target?
3) Is there anything else this commercial can do to make nicotine addicts more aware of their addiction?
4) Is this commercial to graphic? Does it diminish the commercial's main point at all?
5)If you were a nicotine addict would this commercial persuade you to stop smoking? If so, why?
The appearance of the woman is what makes this ad so powerful. Although people know that smoking can be harmful to their bodies, they don’t always think about the superficial outcomes. I think that the ad is targeted at teenagers and young adults. Cigarette companies try to appeal to a younger demographic by making smoking seem attractive and pretty. This ad is the complete opposite of that idea. It wants to show young people that if they continue smoking, their appearance could suffer the consequences.

ReplyDeleteBesides the shock value, I think that one of the main reasons this ad is so compelling is the use of ethos. Young people are usually discouraged from smoking from people such as their parents and teachers. Since the people telling them about how harmful smoking is have usually not experienced the effects firsthand their testimony has less value. In this ad, the woman who is talking about mouth cancer actually has mouth cancer. I feel that this makes her seem like a reliable source to the viewer and makes her message more powerful and trustworthy.
I fully agree with Alex's response to this ad. He describes how young individuals are often told the effects of smoking but do not experience them firsthand. The most prominent effect of this ad is very obviously not the dialogue but the visual representation of what smoking can have on an individual. One cannot walk away from and not have some sort of emotional effect from what smoking has done to this women's life. I think this add is particularly strong because is makes stop and think about the effects smoking can have.
