I found this poster by typing in "anti-drug posters" on Google. It appealed to me because cigarettes don't come up in class too often, but indeed are still a deadly drug.
1. Why does the author use different colored font for the words "drugs" and "your life"?
2. What is the purpose of having the person be made out of the word drugs?
3. Why do the words change from drugs to death as the smoke goes up?
4. What is the effect of the author saying it is not funny or a joke? Why does he choose these words?
I think that the purpose of making the human shadow out of the word ‘drug’ is to grab your attention. If the poster had been just a silhouette of a man in all black, most people would just walk by without giving it any notice. Seeing the word drug in all sizes makes people take notice. I also think there is a message within it. I feel that it was used to signify that when a person has an addiction to something, it makes them who they are. Soon, the addiction is controlling the person’s actions, thoughts, and feelings. Building the man out of the word shows that without the drug, this man would not be there.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the purpose of making the human shadow out of the word 'drug' is to grab attention of the viewer. However, I think it goes on further than just saying drugs make them who they are. It also signifies how drugs take away from who you are, and you cannot be fully yourself just as the image is not full.

ReplyDeleteI believe the person who created this picture colored the words "drugs" and "your life" to make that a focal point for the picture. If one just reads those words they are likely to be interested because those two terms are prominent in most people's life. The sole purpose of the colored terms are to grab attention.

ReplyDeleteI believe the words change from drugs to death as the smoke goes up representing what happens as one continues their use of drugs. It conveys the message that when one starts using drugs they do not see any harm in it but as they progressively continue to use, the drug could result in death which I think is why the author made the last word in the smoke "Death" bigger than the rest. I think that, "drugs" and "your life" is used in a different color to convey the theme of self-control. When you look at the poster these are the first words that I saw and the author most likely wants the audience to make a direct connection between the fact that it is your life and only up to yourself in the end to choose to do drugs or not.
This picture presents an interesting message. The words "death" are shown rising as smoke from some form of an inhalant. The words "drugs" make up the form of a person. The person in this case appears to have control of death as they could easily put down whatever is emitting death and walk away. The drugs in their system would remain for a time but it would seems to suggest the pressure of imminent death would become relaxed.
ReplyDeleteWe know cigarettes are typically filtered. Is this suggesting that it's only a matter of time until enough of the ingredients of death pass through the filter and reassembles itself to take on its identity within a person?
The increase in size of the text of "death" as the smoke it represents climbs can contain some important implications. Smoke takes time to rise, the youngest of it is found closest to the source. In this case the text of "death" is smallest at the source and increases in size as it dissipates, or ages. The authors may be trying to suggest that with more exposure to drugs over time the likelihood of death increases.

ReplyDeleteThis audience for this poster is people who use drugs. Therefore, when the creator of this poster says that drugs are not funny or a joke, he/she is trying to prove that people should not be using just because they feel like it. This poster says that using drugs to get into a different state of mind can be dangerous and can lead to death. People who use drugs tend to take these kinds of posters like they are a joke. They do not always believe that drugs can really do any damage. However, the creator says it plainly, "It isn't a joke.", and does not use a play on words to say the same thing but in a nicer way.
This poster portrays drugs in a negative fashion. Repetition is the key persuasive device used in this poster. Though the poster is composed entirely of words only nine different words are ever used. The concept of drugs and their connections with death is the major point of the poster. The person's shadow is made up of drugs and they are smoking “death.” Our group also noticed that the maker of the poster uses black and orange instead of red which is a more noticeable color. We said this is true it emphasizes the point that drugs dull your sense of everything, even this message.
ReplyDeleteThis poster chooses the words "joke" and "funny" as a way to create irony in the poster. These words contradict the seriousness of drugs and death that can be caused by drugs. The structure of the sentences, the repetition, and the way they all flow together emphasizes the way the poster presents it's message. It is ironic how death is going up and getting bigger, whereas when we think of death is going into the ground, you decompose and get smaller. THe word choice and structure completes the theme.
